Quick Tip: Shape Language

How can you distinguish your identity with shape language, using Mass Effect as example.

Mass Effect has different shape languages that they use throughout the trilogy or specific games, but one that is constant and at the heart of its design is the planet curve.

It’s a shape that is integrated in many elements, some are obvious like for the design of many weapons such as the iconic assault rifle shown here (and other weapons), some are not as obvious unless you are paying attention, like the architecture shown to the right.

The curve is even drawn inside the logo itself, and is a big inspiration for the font itself, and even the start screens in the trilogy are Earth’s closeup.

Not shown here, you can also find this shape language on the Geth, a recurring enemy in the series, as well as on the Normandy, the beloved trilogy’s spaceship! As you can see, this language permeates the entire brand.

So think about using recurring shape language on your own project! And even if sometimes as creators we might think it is too obvious a trick, it helps tie in the whole visual universe and is worth including in your art direction.
