Are graphics more important than art direction?

So this debate tends to pop up in conversations once in a while and tends to sometimes generate fairly binary opinions. So here is mine 😉

Technology is a tool, and does not make things instantly appealing or good quality. It’s very easy to make a generic or a visually inconsistent game with high end graphics when you don’t have artistic understanding and mastery to harness the tools available to you.

High end graphics also won’t automatically offer your game a creative pacing, emotion, surprising worlds or a unique perspective. The truth is you can make amazing looking, engaging visual universes with any kind of graphics, limited or not, or any technological constraints.

So my philosophy is to dare to push the limits, offer your own creative point of view, play with colours, shapes, mix and matching and see where that takes you!

The limit is your imagination & the backbone of it is a solid art direction to make it consistent and interesting.
